A couple of weeks ago we were given the assignment to draw an insectoid creature. Creature could be from any kind of fiction, be it sci-fi or fantasy and it could either be a person, a monster or both. We were really just told to go crazy with an insect idea.

These are the sketches I produced whilst coming up with ideas for my final piece. I was influenced by many different insects and drew designs that varied  from monstrous to sort of cute.

These were three of the designs I believed to be most promising. A large hulking monster, a lanky bug-man with a camera, and a more human take on an insectoid creature.

The design I went with was that of the lanky alien with a camera, named Shovelface. I chose him as I had already sort of given him a name and thought he had more character than a generic insect alien monster.

This is an inked picture of Shovelface which was to be painted in Photoshop.

This is the coloured picture of Shovelface. I omitted the background as I found that it would clash with the colour scheme of the insect photographer.

Shovelface's occupation is Space Tourist; he travels all over the galaxy taking pictures of pretty landscapes and nebulae and posts them on his Instagrogm (the galactic version of Instagram) page. He gets all of his funds from donations from fans of his work and uses it to go places and take even more photos of things.
